OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, has always been transparent about logging all ChatGPT interactions. They use the chat history feature to keep these records and to enhance its language model. Despite assuring users that the data is solely for training purposes, this raised privacy concerns among many users.

In response, OpenAI introduced a new feature called Incognito mode, which allows you to use ChatGPT without having your interactions recorded.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through the steps to use this new privacy feature, as well as show you other ways you can use it to keep your ChatGPT chats hidden.

How to Use Private ChatGPT Mode to Hide Your Chats

The ChatGPT Incognito Mode is available to both free users and paid subscribers. In this mode, your chats are not stored, ensuring privacy. Plus, Open AI will not use your data for internal testing.

If you change your mind, you can always re-enable it. Just remember, chats in this mode automatically vanish after 30 days.

Here’s how to activate Incognito Mode on your computer:

  1. Go to the ChatGPT website and log into your account.
  2. In the bottom-left corner of the screen, select the three dots icon next to your username (or your profile pic) to open the menu.

  1. From the menu, choose Settings.
  2. In the Settings window, select Data Controls.

  1. Toggle the switch off next to Chat History & Training to enter Incognito mode and disable recording of your chats.

That’s it, now your chat history is incognito. If you’re using ChatGPT on different devices or in different browsers, you’ll need to follow the same steps to enable the Incognito mode on each of them individually.

If you later change your mind, or need to access your conversations in normal mode, simply select Enable Chat History from the sidebar on the left.

Other Ways to Hide Your ChatGPT Chats on Computer

The Incognito mode isn’t the only method you can use to keep your ChatGPT conversations completely private. Here are a few more ways you can use to hide your chats.

Use ChatGPT Without Signing In (With the Help of Merlin AI)

Logging into your account brings up all your previously recorded chats, as your chat history on ChatGPT is tied to your OpenAI account. One way to avoid OpenAI keeping records is to skip the login part.

Merlin AI is a chatbot assistant that comes in the form of an application and browser extension that can help you use ChatGPT without signing into your OpenAI account. All you need to do is download the Marlin app or extension and start using ChatGPT inside it. You’ll need to create an account with Merlin to do it, but the information from this account won’t be shared with OpenAI, thus keeping your conversations private.

Wish to use ChatGPT without signing in? Here’s how to do it using Merlin for ChatGPT:

  1. Download the Merlin AI extension from the Chrome Web Store.
  2. Go to the webpage where you want to use Merlin AI. Then select the Merlin extension icon in the Chrome toolbar.

  1. Select Sign in.
  2. You can use the same or a different email address. Merlin won’t link it to your OpenAI account.
  3. Select Chatbot from the sidebar on the left and start your conversations.

Enjoy asking questions on ChatGPT without the hassle of your chat history being saved. Merlin ensures a secure and anonymous ChatGPT experience. Now you don’t have to worry about your interactions being tied to your OpenAI account.

Hide Your Chats by Archiving Them

If you just want to hide your conversations, you can archive them using another built-in feature in ChatGPT.

It’s important to note that ChatGPT’s archiving feature provides a simple way to organize and hide chats, but it doesn’t add an additional layer of security. Hidden chats are accessible to anyone who navigates to the settings menu, ensuring transparency in the archiving process.

Still, you can use this feature to keep your ChatGPT chats somewhat discreet. Here’s how to archive your chats in ChatGPT:

  1. Visit chat.openai.com and log in with your OpenAI account credentials.
  2. Select the chat you want to hide from the sidebar on the left.
  3. Next to the chat’s name, select the three dots icon to open options and choose Archive chat from the context menu.
Screenshot of ChatGPT Archive option
  1. Alternatively, select an Archive button next to the chat’s name.

The chat disappears instantly, but you can always retrieve it from the ChatGPT settings. If you want to view your archived chats, you can access them or even bring back hidden conversations with these simple steps.

  1. Select your OpenAI account name in the bottom-left corner.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. In the Settings menu, select Manage next to Archived chats.

Remember, hidden chats aren’t password-protected and can be accessed by anyone. Keep this in mind for a secure ChatGPT experience.

Hide Your ChatGPT History With a Browser Extension

You can hide your ChatGPT conversations using the Hide ChatGPT Sidebar Chrome extension. It helps you hide your chat history by hiding the sidebar on the left where all of your conversations are listed. This is another method to avoid someone else snooping in your chat history with ChatGPT.

To set it up, follow these steps below.

  1. Download and install the Hide ChatGPT Sidebar extension from the Chrome Web Store.
  2. Open an active ChatGPT session.
  3. Click on the extension icon in Chrome and select Hide ChatGPT Sidebar from the extension options.
  4. Select Toggle Sidebar to hide or show the ChatGPT sidebar. Now you can use the Close Sidebar option to hide your conversation list.

This extension conceals the left sidebar, securing your ChatGPT conversation history from prying eyes. You can keep your chats private with this simple and effective browser extension.

How to Hide Your ChatGPT Chats on Smartphone

If you often use ChatGPT on your smartphone, you may want to keep your chats there hidden as well. The two main ways to hide your ChatGPT chats on your smartphone are using the Incognito Mode feature and archiving your chats. Here’s how to use both of them.

Use Incognito Mode on Your Smartphone

In order to use Incognito Mode on your mobile phone, open the ChatGPT app on your smartphone and follow the steps below.

  1. Open the ChatGPT app on your Android or iOS device.
  2. Open the menu and select the three dots icon next to your username.

Archive Your Chats on the ChatGPT Mobile App

If you simply want to remove your chats from the conversations list on the app, you can use the Archive chats feature on ChatGPT.

This feature is currently available for the ChatGPT Web users and for iOS users. To archive your chats on your iPhone, follow the steps below.

  1. Open the ChatGPT app and log into your account.
  2. Open the chat list and select the chat that you want to hide.
  3. Long-press on the chat you want to archive (hide) and select Archive from the context menu.

Do you keep running into a “Conversation not found” error immediately after entering a prompt in ChatGPT? It might affect just one conversation or all of them, and it can occur with any language model—be it GPT 3.5 or GPT 4.

This troubleshooting tutorial will walk you through multiple techniques to fix the “Conversation not found” error in ChatGPT’s web and mobile applications.

Top 13 Ways to Fix "Conversation Not Found" Error in ChatGPT image

1. Refresh ChatGPT

Refreshing ChatGPT is often the quickest way to eliminate random technical glitches preventing the AI chatbot from working correctly. Select the Reload icon next to the address bar and re-open the conversation if you’re on a web browser.

Refresh ChatGPT image

If you use the ChatGPT app on your iPhone or Android, you must force-quit the app to refresh the current session. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen, swipe away the ChatGPT card, and relaunch ChatGPT from the Home Screen.

2. Check Your Internet

ChatGPT requires a stable internet connection to its web servers to function. Before you dive into more complex solutions, perform a quick check on your Wi-Fi or cellular network. Run a speed test, load other websites, stream a video—you know the drill.

If your internet appears slow, try restarting or resetting your router. On mobile devices, you can also enable and disable Airplane mode. If the problem persists, contact your internet service provider or learn how to troubleshoot a cellular data connection.

3. Check the ChatGPT Server Status

OpenAI’s servers frequently go offline due to high traffic and stop ChatGPT from processing previous interactions within a conversation.

Visit the OpenAI Status page and ensure all ChatGPT systems are operational. You can also check for reports of outages from other ChatGPT users on social media sites like Reddit.

Check the ChatGPT Server Status image

4. Disable VPNs

Virtual private networks, or VPNs, are great for increasing privacy and getting around geographical restrictions. However, VPNs also create regional mismatches between online tools—like ChatGGPT—and their web servers. If you’re using a VPN, try turning it off to see if that resolves the issue.

5. Update the ChatGPT App

OpenAI frequently releases updates to fix bugs and improve performance in the ChatGPT app for mobile devices. If you don’t have automatic app updates on your iPhone or Android:

  1. Go to the App Store on iOS or the Google Play Store on Android.
  2. Search for ChatGPT.
  3. If an update is available, tap Update.

6. Check the Guidelines and Parameters

When you use ChatGPT, your prompts must align with OpenAI’s guidelines and parameters. For example, queries that exceed the token limit can overload the LLM (language learning model), leading to errors like “Conversation not found.” For more information, check OpenAI’s prompt engineering support documentation.

7. Log Out and Back In

Logging out and then back into your ChatGPT account can help resolve the “Conversation not found” error by refreshing your access permissions.

To log out, select your profile picture at the bottom left of the window and choose Sign Out. For the mobile app, open the conversations menu (tap the two lines on the top left) to reveal the option to log out.

Log Out and Back In image

After that, select Sign In and log back in with your ChatGPT credentials.

8. Clear Browser Cookies and Cache

The ChatGPT web app stores data from OpenAI’s servers to improve performance. However, if there’s a problem with this stored data, it can cause errors like “Conversation not found.” To eliminate this possibility, you should clear your browser’s cache.

Most browsers like Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, and Microsoft Edge follow a similar process for deleting the cookies and cache. Take Chrome as an example:

  1. Open the Chrome menu and go to Settings > Privacy & security > Clear browsing data.
  2. Set Time range to All time and check the boxes next to Cookies and other site data and Cached images and files.
  3. Select Clear data.
  4. Refresh the ChatGPT tab and sign back in.

If you need additional help, check our complete guide to clearing the cache on any desktop browser.

9. Clear the Cache on the Mobile App

ChatGPT’s mobile app on Android and iPhone stores data in the device’s internal cache, similar to its web counterpart. To clear the ChatGPT cache on Android:

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Go to Apps > ChatGPT.
  3. Tap Force Quit.
  4. Tap Storage.
  5. Tap Clear Cache.

Note: If you have a subscription to ChatGPT Plus, open the app’s conversations menu, tap your profile picture, and select Restore Purchases.

10. Clear the DNS Cache

A corrupt or obsolete DNS (Domain Name Server) cache can lead to random connectivity issues with various websites and servers, especially on desktop devices. To clear the DNS cache:

Windows

  1. Open the Start menu, type cmd, and select Run as administrator.
  2. Type the following command and press Enter:

ipconfig /flushdns

Mac

  1. Open the Launchpad and select Other > Terminal.
  2. Execute the following command:

sudo dscacheutil -flushcache;sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder

11. Disable Browser Extensions

Browser extensions—notably content and ad blockers—can interfere with ChatGPT. To confirm:

  1. Disable all extensions by accessing the Extensions management screen in your browser. E.g., in Chrome, select Extensions > Manage Extensions on the top right of any window.
  2. Quit the browser. If you’re on a Mac, Control-click the browser icon on the Dock and select Quit.
  3. Re-open the browser and access ChatGPT again.

If that works, re-enable the extensions individually to identify the problematic browser add-on.

12. Open a New ChatGPT Conversation

Older conversations in ChatGPT might not function properly due to recent changes to language learning models. If the problem recurs, regardless of what you do, the best solution is to start a new chat from scratch.

Open a New ChatGPT Conversation image

13. Contact OpenAI Support

If all else fails and the “Conversation Not Found” error pops up intermittently with both old and new conversations, it’s time to get support from OpenAI.

Visit the OpenAI Help Center, select Chat > Messages in the lower-right corner, and choose ChatGPT > Other > Report a Bug or Error as responses. Explain your problem, attach a screenshot of the “Conversation not found” error, and wait until you hear back from OpenAI.

Conversation Found

ChatGPT’s “Conversation not found” error occurs for several reasons. Start with straightforward solutions like refreshing the AI tool or checking your internet connection, then move on to advanced fixes such as clearing your DNS cache or identifying conflicting browser add-ons. If the problem persists, contact the ChatGPT support team for assistance.

After creating your OpenAI account, you can easily log in to ChatGPT at any time. Head over to the Login page, select Log in, and enter your ChatGPT login credentials.

Optional Upgrade to ChatGPT Plus

ChatGPT is 100% free, but it comes with some downsides. For example, the platform will be available to you only at times when the demand for ChatGPT is low. That means that users who opted for a paid subscription have priority over you. With the free account, your ChatGPT has a standard response speed and regular updates, while ChatGPT Plus users benefit from a faster response speed and priority access to updates and new features.

How to Sign Up for ChatGPT image 12

All in all, paid members have access to GPT-4, a larger and more advanced language learning model. Free plan users have access to the older, GPT-3.5 version.

If you want to upgrade to the Plus membership simply click on the Plus button on the lower-left side of the menu. A Plus membership costs $20 per month, and you’ll have to provide the payment information in order to finish the process.

How to Access ChatGPT Without Logging In

You don’t have to log in every time you want to use ChatGPT. Instead, you can use Bing Chat. It’s also free, and it’s built with the newest OpenAI product, GPT-4. But in order to have long conversations without a ChatGPT account, you’ll need to use your Microsoft account to log into Bing.

A Quick Guide on How to Use ChatGPT

After you sign up, you’ll arrive at the ChatGPT main screen. This is where you can start using it. As mentioned before, OpenAI gives some examples of how you can use their language model. But this will give you only a general idea of what you can do with this AI-powered tool.

What you need to do is formulate a question or a task for ChatGTP and type it in the designated text bar. You’ll find the chat bar at the bottom of the screen. Your entries are called prompts. To submit them simply press enter. ChatGPT will take a bit of time to generate an answer for you. Besides the basic questions such as “What’s Quantum Mechanics?” you can develop your prompt and give ChatGPT instructions on how to answer it. For Example “Explain what is quantum mechanics as if I’m 5 years old”

Or “Explain what is quantum mechanics in an academic language.”

How to Sign Up for ChatGPT image 9

Adding more information to your prompt can control the tone and style of the answer. That’s how ChatGPT understands the instructions you give it.

Your prompts can range from simple questions to very complex tasks. Did you know ChatGPT can even write code? But that doesn’t necessarily mean AI is dangerous and turn into Skynet… hopefully.

How to Use ChatGPT With an AI Keyboard

The ChatGPT AI bots mentioned earlier are fantastic for chatting with ChatGPT. However, they have message limits. If you want to use ChatGPT on WhatsApp without dealing with those limits, we have a solution for you. ChatGPT keyboards have AI integration and can respond like the bots.

A keyboard app, like Paragraph AI or Microsoft Swiftkey, brings the power of GPT-3 to your fingertips, even though ChatGPT is now powered by the advanced GPT-4 language model.

Integrating an AI keyboard with WhatsApp is a breeze. To do that, follow the steps below.

  1. Install the preferred AI keyboard app on your device. Paragraph AI is available for Android and iOS devices for free.
  2. Set the AI keyboard as your default keyboard option.
  3. Now, you’re all set to deploy ChatGPT in your WhatsApp chats and beyond.

Unlike chatbots, AI-integrated keyboards offer additional advantages and expand beyond WhatsApp:

  • Conversations everywhere. While WhatsApp chatbots like Shmooz AI are restricted to conversations within WhatsApp, AI keyboards like Paragraph AI can be used across multiple apps on your device, providing GPT-3’s assistance in various contexts.
  • Instant answers. Need quick information without leaving your chat? Simply select Write on the keyboard, type your question, and Paragraph AI will fetch the answer from the web instantly.
  • Enhanced replies. The Reply button on the keyboard allows you to generate more sophisticated answers to respond to your conversations. If the AI-generated response doesn’t quite hit the mark, you can hit the Improve button for a revised answer.
  • More control over the tone of your writing. For even more control over AI-generated responses, you can adjust the tonality, choosing between formal and informal, friendly and assertive, and pessimistic and optimistic tones. A slider allows you to customize the responses as per your preferences.
  • Free tier advantage. The best part of using AI keyboards is that they often offer generous free tiers that can cater to your requirements without the need for a premium subscription.

Aside from Paragraph AI, Microsoft’s SwiftKey keyboard with Bing Chat integration is another good option. It’s free and already upgraded to the latest GPT-4 language model, offered by OpenAI.

By integrating ChatGPT with an AI keyboard, you unlock the power of conversational AI across various apps, making interactions more efficient, informative, and enjoyable. You can also use the keyboard to easily write all types of content, like emails, essays, and other formats.

Pro Option: Add ChatGPT to WhatsApp Using a Python Script

If you’re looking for an alternative (and open source, i.e. free) method to connect ChatGPT with WhatsApp without relying on chatbots or AI keyboards, using a Python Script is another great option. Developed by Daniel (the creator of Python Script), this technique allows you to combine both apps, even if you’re not a programmer.

However, setting your WhatsApp number using a Python script and launching ChatGPT simultaneously will require some tech skill, that’s why we marked it as a pro option and not a beginner-friendly method.

To integrate ChatGPT with WhatsApp using a Python Script, go to the WhatsApp-GPT Github page, download the code and follow the instructions on the screen to run ChatGPT in your WhatsApp account.

You can then try asking it questions and enjoy the benefits of AI-powered conversations right within WhatsApp.

Use AI to Enrich Your WhatsApp Conversation With Meaningful Discussions

Adding ChatGPT to WhatsApp brings exciting AI-powered conversations and interactions with friends. You can choose chatbots, AI keyboards, or the Python Script method to do it.

As long as you use ChatGPT responsibly, you can enjoy instant answers, image generation, and meaningful discussions.

ChatGPT, created by OpenAI, is an advanced AI-powered language model. It’s great for having interactive conversations and helping you with a wide range of online tasks. However, the requirement of phone number verification to register and access ChatGPT worries those users who prioritize their privacy and personal data.

If you want to use ChatGPT without providing your real phone number for verification, there are alternative methods you can try. In this article, we’ll explore different ways to use ChatGPT without needing your actual phone number.

How to Use ChatGPT Without a Phone Number image

Why ChatGPT Requires Your Phone Number

OpenAI ChatGPT requires users to provide their phone numbers for account verification. While some people may not want to share their private numbers, there are valid reasons behind this requirement. Here are some reasons why ChatGPT asks for your phone number to create a new account.

  • Maintaining Security and Authenticity. Phone number verification helps confirm that you’re a real person and reduces the risk of misuse or fraudulent behavior. When you link your phone number to your ChatGPT account, it creates a more secure environment, making it harder for fake or malicious accounts to be created.
  • Preventing Abuse. In the past, some people have misused ChatGPT for harmful purposes like spreading spam, fake information, or engaging in harmful behaviors. To prevent this, ChatGPT now requires phone number verification. This helps keep users accountable and discourages anyone from using the technology for dangerous activities.
  • User Protection. Phone number verification also helps prevent others from accessing your OpenAI account without permission and offers a way to recover or secure your account if needed.
  • Compliance with Regulations. Finally, this type of verification is necessary to comply with regulations and ensure user protection. It helps OpenAI meet legal requirements, including data protection and privacy rules.

Even though phone number verification is currently a requirement for ChatGPT, according to OpenAI, they continue exploring alternative options and methods to improve user privacy and provide more flexible access to its services.

If you’re still unconvinced and are looking for a way to use ChatGPT without sharing your primary phone number with OpenAI, here are a few different methods you can try.

Use ChatGPT With WhatsApp

If you reside in specific countries where ChatGPT is not officially available, you can use WhatsApp as an alternative to a phone number for account verification.

This option is available for Android and iOS users in countries such as India, Indonesia, Pakistan, Nigeria, Israel, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Vietnam, Ukraine, Malaysia, Egypt, and Turkey. You can also try using VPN to switch to a server in one of those countries and then access chat.openai.com via WhatsApp.

While WhatsApp still requires a phone number for sign-up, you can utilize a landline or VoIP number during the registration process.

By using a VoIP number, you can complete the verification process without sharing your personal phone number. Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services allow you to obtain a phone number that operates over the internet. With VoIP, you can use a virtual number to receive the verification code for ChatGPT. Many VoIP providers offer free or low-cost options, making it an affordable choice for ChatGPT users who value their privacy. By using a VoIP number, you can easily receive the verification code and activate your ChatGPT account without providing your personal phone number.

Use Google’s AI Bot – Google Bard

If you have a Google account, you can try using Google Bard, an AI chatbot from Google, without providing your phone number. It uses Google’s own LaMDA language model instead of GPT-3 and is slightly different and limited compared to ChatGPT.

Use Google's AI Bot - Google Bard image

However, while Bard has some limitations, like being unable to help with coding, it can still be a good way to explore AI chatbots without sharing your phone number. Visit https://bard.google.com to give Bard a try. It’s a great ChatGPT alternative if you want to experience artificial intelligence chatbots without the phone number requirement.

Unfortunately, Google Bard isn’t available worldwide yet. Go to the AI bot’s page to check if you can use it from your location.

Use Bing ChatGPT

If you prefer to use ChatGPT without going through mobile number verification, you can explore another AI tool called Bing ChatGPT, which is provided by Microsoft’s search engine, Bing. This version of ChatGPT doesn’t require phone number verification.

Use Bing ChatGPT image

Instead, you’ll need a Microsoft account to use Bing ChatGPT. Unlike signing up through OpenAI, you can obtain a Microsoft account using a VoIP phone number (e.g., those available through Google Voice). To get started with Bing ChatGPT, simply visit the website https://www.bing.com/new. By offering this alternative, Microsoft provides users with more flexibility and options to access the benefits of ChatGPT without compromising their privacy.

Use ChatGPT on Snapchat

Another option you can explore to use ChatGPT without a mobile phone number is a Snapchat bot. Snapchat features its own AI chatbot called My AI, powered by ChatGPT. The advantage is that Snapchat doesn’t require a phone number to sign up.

While My AI’s capabilities may be more limited compared to the full version of ChatGPT, you can still enjoy interacting with the chatbot on both mobile and web platforms.

Use ChatGPT on Snapchat image

To use Snapchat’s My AI bot, log into your Snapchat account on the app or create a new account, then go to your Chats tab, and you’ll see a chat with My AI on top of your chat list. That way, you can use a phone number-free option to interact with an AI bot similar to ChatGPT while also utilizing other features of Snapchat.

Use the Reddit ChatGPT Discord Channel

Another way to access ChatGPT without the requirement of a phone number is by utilizing the Reddit ChatGPT Discord channel.

The /r/ChatGPT subreddit has a public Discord server with ChatGPT bots. Once you create or sign in to your Discord account, you’ll have access to a variety of chatbots, including ChatGPT-1, ChatGPT-2, Bing-AI-1, and Bing-AI-2.

To do that, follow the steps below.

  1. Open Reddit on your device.
  2. Join the server at https://www.reddit.com/r/ChatGPT.

  2. Log into your Discord account and accept the invite.
Use the Reddit ChatGPT Discord Channel image 2

You can then interact with various chatbots, including ChatGPT-1, ChatGPT-2, Bing-AI-1, and Bing-AI-2, without needing a phone number.

Use ChatGPT With a Temporary Phone Number

Temporary phone number services provide disposable numbers that are valid for a short duration. These numbers are commonly used for online verifications and can be useful for ChatGPT registration. Apps like Dingtone and similar platforms offer free temporary phone numbers to receive SMS messages.

Use ChatGPT With a Temporary Phone Number image

By obtaining a temporary number, you can receive the verification code and enter it into the ChatGPT app or website to complete the registration process. Temporary phone numbers ensure that your personal phone number remains private and secure.

Use a Friend’s Phone to Access ChatGPT

If you have a trusted friend who already has a ChatGPT account, you can ask them to verify your account on their device. Each phone number can be used for verification on two ChatGPT accounts.

Remember that sharing your account with a friend may grant them access to your account by resetting your password. Make sure to only use this method with someone you trust to avoid accidentally giving a random person access to your personal information.

Contact OpenAI Support Team

If you have concerns about providing a phone number for ChatGPT verification, you can contact OpenAI’s support team. They are equipped to address your queries and may offer alternative verification methods or guidance on using ChatGPT without a phone number.

Contacting the support team allows you to clarify any doubts you may have and find a suitable solution that meets your privacy requirements.

Use ChatGPT With No Phone Verification

While phone number verification is a requirement for using ChatGPT, there are workarounds available for those who prefer not to provide their phone number. By utilizing alternative options like WhatsApp verification, online SMS verification tools, Bing ChatGPT, Snapchat’s My AI, the Reddit ChatGPT Discord channel, or Google Bard, users can access the benefits of ChatGPT without needing a phone number verification. These options provide flexibility, privacy, and the opportunity to explore the capabilities of AI chatbots.

If you’re encountering an “Internal server error” on ChatGPT, the site is probably down or experiencing other technical problems. You can try to resolve the issue by tweaking a few items here and there. We’ll show you how to get around this ChatGPT issue so you can start using your favorite digital AI assistant.

Some other reasons you can’t use ChatGPT are that your web browser’s cache is corrupted, your ChatGPT login session has a problem, your web browser extensions are faulty, and more.

Check Your Internet Connection

One reason you have trouble accessing ChatGPT is that your internet connection isn’t working. The connection may have stopped working suddenly, causing ChatGPT not to load.

In this case, check your connection’s status by launching a new tab in your web browser and opening a different site. Your site won’t load if your connection has problems. In this case, try to resolve your internet problems by rebooting your router, restarting your computer, or reaching out to your internet service provider (ISP).

Refresh ChatGPT in Your Web Browser

After verifying that your internet connection is working, reload your ChatGPT web page to see if that makes the site work. The site or your web browser may have a minor issue, which you can resolve by refreshing your current web page.

You can refresh web pages in most web browsers by selecting the refresh icon beside the address bar.

If this doesn’t resolve your issue, move to the next fix.

Check ChatGPT’s Server Status

ChatGPT’s servers may be experiencing issues, making the site unavailable to users. This usually happens when the site gets a lot of visitors. This surge in traffic causes congestion on the platform’s servers, leading to a server outage.

In this case, check if ChatGPT is indeed down using the OpenAI Status site. This official OpenAI site tells you if ChatGPT’s experiencing issues online.

If the site is indeed down, you’ll have to wait until OpenAI resolves the issues and brings the platform back up.

Utilize a VPN on Your Computer

One possible reason you get an “Internal server error” message is that ChatGPT has blocked your IP address. This happens when the site receives too many spam requests from an IP address.

You can check if that’s the case using a VPN on your computer. A VPN app allows you to change your machine’s IP address and pretend to be from another location. This helps you bypass your sites’ restrictions.

You can get a new VPN app or use the existing one installed on your computer to check if ChatGPT is working.

Sign Out and Back Into Your ChatGPT Account

Sometimes, a login session issue causes ChatGPT not to work as intended. If you’re getting the “Internal server error” message only occasionally, log out and back into your account to possibly fix your issue.

It goes without saying that you’ll need your ChatGPT logins to sign back into your account, so keep those details handy.

  1. Select your profile in the ChatGPT site’s bottom-left corner.
  2. Choose Log out in the menu that opens.
  1. Log back into your account on the site.

Use a Different Web Browser on Your Computer

Your web browser issues can sometimes prevent you from using ChatGPT. In this case, verify that by launching a different browser on your computer and accessing the ChatGPT site.

You can switch to your favorite web browser, including but not limited to Chrome, Firefox, Edge, or Safari. If you can load the site in the new browser, your previous browser likely had a problem. In this case, clear that browser’s cache and disable the installed extensions in that browser to possibly fix your issue. The steps on how to do these tasks are in the following sections.

Clear Your Web Browser Cache

One item that can possibly cause issues loading your sites is your web browser’s faulty cache. Your browser caches various web content to allow you to surf the web faster. Sometimes, this cache goes corrupt, causing many problems.

In this case, you can clear your browser’s cache to fix your issue. You don’t lose your browsing history, bookmarks, passwords, or other items when you do that.

Google Chrome

  1. Open Chrome, type the following in the address bar, and press Enter:
    chrome://settings/clearBrowserData
  2. Select All time from the Time range drop-down menu.
  1. Enable the Cached images and files option and untick all other options.
  2. Select Clear data at the bottom.

Mozilla Firefox

  1. Launch Firefox, select the three horizontal lines in the top-right corner, and choose History > Clear recent history.
  2. Choose Everything in the Time range to clear the drop-down menu.
  1. Tick-mark the Cache option leaving all other options disabled.
  2. Select Clear Now at the bottom.

Microsoft Edge

  1. Open Edge, enter the following in the address bar, and press Enter:
    edge://settings/clearBrowserData
  2. Select All time from the Time range drop-down menu.
  1. Enable the Cached images and files option. Disable all other options.
  2. Select Clear now to clear the cache.

Turn Off Your Web Browser Extensions

Your web browser extensions let you get the most out of your browser app, but sometimes, those extensions are corrupted or buggy. Such add-ons lead to various errors in your browser apps, including causing your sites not to load.

That may be the reason you can’t access ChatGPT in your browser. In this case, turn off all your browser extensions and check if the site loads. You can then re-enable one extension at a time to find and remove the culprit item.

Google Chrome

  1. Select the three dots in Chrome’s top-right corner and choose Extensions > Manage Extensions.
  2. Turn off the toggles for all your extensions.
  1. Reload the ChatGPT site.

Mozilla Firefox

  1. Choose the three horizontal lines in Firefox’s top-right corner and select Add-ons and themes.
  2. Disable the toggles for all your add-ons.
  1. Access the ChatGPT site.

Microsoft Edge

  1. Select the three dots in Edge’s top-right corner and choose Extensions > Manage extensions.
  2. Turn off all your extensions.
  1. Launch the ChatGPT site.

Multiple Ways to Resolve an “Internal Server Error” on ChatGPT

ChatGPT’s server errors are common, and they’re usually easy to deal with. You can make a few changes on your system to possibly resolve the error, or you can clear or disable a few items in your web browser to get around the problem.

Our guide above walks you through the steps to perform those procedures, so you can regain access to your favorite AI tool. We hope our guide helps you out.

Do you keep running into an “Error in Body Stream” response in ChatGPT? If so, you’re not alone. This is a random error that pops up, often when you request lengthy responses from the AI (artificial intelligence) chatbot.

However, the error can also pop up for a number of common causes, such as overloaded OpenAI servers, random hiccups with the language model, or local issues such as a corrupt browser cache.

In this troubleshooting guide, you’ll learn multiple techniques to fix an “Error in Body Stream” message in ChatGPT.

Reload the Browser Tab

Like any other ChatGPT error, the “Error in Body Stream” response can be caused by a temporary glitch with your chat session.

Repeatedly selecting the Regenerate response button is unlikely to help, so try reloading the ChatGPT website instead—this helps reset the connection—select the Reload icon on the top-left of the screen or press Control + R/Command + R.

You can also restart the web browser if the issue error persists. On Windows, just close and re-open all browser windows. On macOS, make sure to quit the browser before relaunching it—Control-click the browser icon on the Dock and select Quit.

Check ChatGPT Server Status

When encountering the “Error in Body Stream” message, it’s essential to check the system status of ChatGPT. OpenAI server outages can sometimes lead to this error.

Visit OpenAI’s system status page and check if the ChatGPT system is operational. Also check the API status if you’re accessing ChatGPT through a third-party app or service. If there are server issues, wait until OpenAI gets its systems functioning again.

It’s also a good idea to check social media sites like Twitter for reports from other ChatGPT users who are facing server errors. OpenAI’s subreddit on Reddit is another place worth looking at.

Check for Network Errors

Next, make sure there’s nothing wrong with the internet connection on your computer. Here are two quick ways to determine that:

  • Visit Fast.com to check the internet speed.
  • Visit PingTool.org to check the stability of the connection.

Restart or reset your router, use a different network connection, or contact your ISP (internet service provider) if there appears to be persistent slowdowns and connectivity drops.

Submit Shorter Requests

Prompts requiring lengthy ChatGPT responses can overload the language model and cause it to fail. If the “Error in Body Stream” message recurs, try breaking your prompts into multiple parts—ChatGPT is adept at building on past responses, especially GPT-4, so this shouldn’t be an issue.

Alternatively, add word limits at the end of prompts—e.g.,”in 500 words or less”—to avoid taxing the AI chatbot.

Switch Natural Language Models

At the time of writing, ChatGPT offers two natural language models, and occasionally, issues with a specific model can trigger the “Error in Body Stream” message.

If you subscribe to ChatGPT Plus, create a new chat and pick an alternative language model—at the time of writing, there are two available models—GPT-3.5 and GPT-4.

Clear Browser Cache

Clear your web browser’s cache if the “Error in Body Stream” in ChatGPT becomes a recurring issue. This helps resolve problems that crop up because of obsolete or corrupt site data.

In brief, here’s how to clear the browser cache if you use Google Chrome:

  1. Open the Chrome menu—select the three-dot icon on the top right of the browser window—and select Settings.
  2. Go to Privacy and security > Clear browsing data.
  3. Check the boxes next to Cookies and other site data and Cached images and files and choose Clear data.

Refer to our browser cache removal guide for specific step-by-step instructions.

Update or Use a Different Browser

Browser-specific issues could lead to constant “Error in Body Stream” responses. A quick way to fix the issue is to check for new browser updates.

For example, in Chrome, opening the Chrome menu and selecting Help > About Google Chrome prompts it to install new updates.

If your browser is already up-to-date, temporarily switch to a different web browser until another update arrives that could hopefully resolve the issue.

Again, if you’re a Chrome user, use ChatGPT in Mozilla Firefox or the native Microsoft Edge (Windows) or Apple Safari (Mac) browser.

Contact ChatGPT Support

If you’ve exhausted all troubleshooting steps and the “Error in Body Stream” message persists, it’s time to seek assistance from OpenAI support. Here’s how:

  1. Visit the OpenAI Help Center.
  2. Select the Chat icon on the lower-right corner of the screen.
  3. Switch to the Messages tab.
  4. Select ChatGPT > Other > Report a Bug or Error as your chat responses.
  5. Mention your problem, reproduce the body stream error, and attach a screenshot of it.

Are you excited to use ChatGPT, the revolutionary Artificial Intelligence (AI) chatbot developed by OpenAI? Signing up for a ChatGPT account allows you to tap into this incredible language model’s power and explore its endless possibilities.

However, if you need help with the signup process, don’t worry! In this article, we’ll explore some common problems users face and provide several fixes to get you up and running quickly when you see “signup is currently unavailable” or another problem that prevents you from using or reaching the ChatGPT login page.

Can’t Sign Up for ChatGPT? 9 Fixes to Try image

1. Check Your Internet Connection

Before troubleshooting any technical issues, ensuring your internet connection is stable is critical. A weak or intermittent connection can lead to errors during the signup process.

Start by examining your physical setup. Ensure that all cables connecting your modem and router are securely plugged in. A loose or faulty connection can cause intermittent dropouts or weak signals, messing with your ability to access the internet reliably. Also, take a moment to ensure that the Wi-Fi router is adequately powered on and functioning. Refer to its manual to know what the indicator lights should look like when everything is normal.

Check Your Internet Connection image

If you’re connected to the internet via Wi-Fi, evaluate the signal strength and proximity to the router. The farther away you are from the router, the weaker the signal may become, potentially leading to connectivity issues. Likewise, some objects or metal pipes in the walls of older buildings can blog radio signals. Try moving closer to the router, or consider using a Wi-Fi network extender to strengthen the signal throughout your home or workspace.

Next, perform a quick reboot of your modem and router. Power them off, wait for a few seconds, and then power them back on. Restarting your networking equipment can resolve temporary glitches and refresh the connection between your device and the internet service provider.

2. Clear Your Browser Cache To Fix ChatGPT Sign-Up

Clearing your browser cache is a quick and easy way to resolve many web-based problems. Although we’ll focus on Google Chrome, the general concept applies to most browsers.

  1. Open Google Chrome. In the top-right corner of the window, you’ll spot three dots. Select them, and a menu will appear.
  2. Select Settings. Once you’ve done that, a fresh tab will appear, revealing the Chrome Settings page. This is the main control panel for your browsing experience.

  1. Once you’ve selected it, click the Clear data button and watch as the digital cobwebs are swept away, leaving you with a fresh and tidy browser cache.

Remember, these steps may differ slightly depending on your browser, but the general concept remains the same.

3. Try a Different Browser

If clearing your browser cache doesn’t work, it’s worth trying a different browser altogether. Browsers can have unique quirks that may interfere with the signup process. Popular alternatives like Mozilla Firefox or Microsoft Edge are excellent options to consider.

4. Use Incognito Mode

When troubleshooting login issues, using incognito mode can help identify if the problem lies with your browser’s extensions or settings. Here’s how to open an incognito window in different browsers:

  1. Google Chrome: Press Ctrl+Shift+N
  2. Mozilla Firefox: Press Ctrl+Shift+P
  3. Microsoft Edge: Press Ctrl+Shift+N
  4. Apple Safari: Command + Shift + N
Use Incognito Mode image

Once in incognito mode, attempt to sign up for ChatGPT again. If it works in incognito mode, disabling browser extensions or adjusting your regular browsing mode settings may solve the problem.

Just remember that incognito mode won’t hide your location, so you can’t use it to bypass any geographical restrictions preventing your signup.

5. Consider Peak Times

At peak times, the ChatGPT servers may experience high traffic, leading to server errors and temporary unavailability of the signup process. If you encounter such errors, please try again later when the server load is likely lower.

Peak times typically correspond to periods when many users actively engage with ChatGPT. These peaks can occur during specific hours, days of the week, or even in response to events or announcements that spark heightened interest in the service. During these spikes in usage, the servers may become strained, causing delays, timeouts, or server errors when attempting to sign up for ChatGPT.

Consider Peak Times image

If you can’t sign up and keep getting kicked out of an unresponsive page or even an error message, too many people are trying to get on ChatGPT simultaneously. You can always head over to their official OpenAI status page, where it will show you if the ChatGPT service is having outages or not.

Remember time zones, too; the servers you’re trying to access may be in a different time zone, shifting the peak times for you to hours that might seem unusual.

6. Contact Support

If you’ve exhausted the previous options and cannot sign up, it’s time to contact OpenAI’s support team. They have a dedicated support system to assist users facing technical issues. Visit the OpenAI website or contact their support team directly for further guidance.

Remember to document any error messages or issues you encounter along the way. Taking a screenshot can be particularly helpful when contacting support or seeking assistance online. By providing specific details, you enable others to assist you more effectively.

7. Try From a Different Device

If you’re attempting to sign up for ChatGPT using a specific device, such as a Windows PC or an iPhone, try switching to a different device. Sometimes, compatibility issues can arise due to device-specific configurations. Signing up from another device or operating system might bypass these obstacles.

Try From a Different Device image

At the time of writing, there’s an official ChatGPT iPhone app (with Android still coming), which you can also use to sign up. Just choose the “Sign up with email” option to create an OpenAI account. This could be a workaround if the website itself has an issue unrelated to any back-end signup processes.

8. Consider a VPN

Regional restrictions or network configurations may sometimes interfere with the signup process. A virtual private network (VPN) can help bypass these restrictions by routing your internet traffic through a different location. Select a reliable VPN service, connect to a different server location, and then attempt to sign up for ChatGPT.

Just remember you still need a valid phone number used for authentication to sign up, and if you want ChatGPT Plus, you’ll also need a valid payment method. If either of these is from a different region than you’ve set your VPN to, it may not work.

Consider a VPN image

As of this writing, ChatGPT is banned in these countries: Afghanistan, Belarus, Burundi, Central African Republic, China, Cuba, Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Hong Kong, Iran, Italy, Libya, Myanmar, North Korea, Russia, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Syria, Venezuela, and Yemen.

More countries may follow suit, or some currently banning the AI tool may change their laws or policy decisions to unban it. Be warned that if you gain access to ChatGPT in a country where it’s legally banned, you could get into some serious trouble.

9. Explore ChatGPT Alternatives

Explore ChatGPT Alternatives image

If all else fails and you can still access ChatGPT, consider exploring alternative AI chatbot platforms. While ChatGPT is an impressive language model, other options are available, such as BARD, GPT-4, Bing AI, or AI-powered tools provided by companies like Amazon or Apple. These alternatives may offer similar functionalities and help you achieve your goals.

OpenAI’s ChatGPT is an artificial intelligence (AI) tool that’s recently risen in popularity — but it isn’t without its faults. One common error users are encountering is the error code 1020, which prevents users from accessing ChatGPT at all.

In this article, we’ll explain what causes the ChatGPT access denied error code 1020 and how to fix it.

What Causes the ChatGPT Error Code 1020?

When trying to access the ChatGPT website, you might be hit with the following error message: “Access denied error code 1020. You do not have access to chat.openai.com. The site owner may have set restrictions that prevent you from accessing the site.”

Mostly, this error is caused when the site owner has blocked your IP address due to suspicion that you’re abusing ChatGPT or using malicious software. Often, this occurs automatically via a security solution like Cloudflare and may be a false positive that you just got caught up in.

However, this error has a few potential causes, including:

  • IP address blocking. The website, service, or app that you’re trying to access may have a firewall that blocked your IP address. The most likely reason for this is that it detected suspicious or malicious activity (for example, if you try to access the website too frequently).
  • Proxy server or VPN problems. ChatGPT may have blocked your proxy server or virtual private network (VPN) IP, especially if it’s associated with suspicious activity.
  • Faulty web browser or extensions. Occasionally, this error can be caused by a misconfiguration of your web browser or a browser extension that appears suspicious.
  • Internal ChatGPT issues. Interestingly, if you ask ChatGPT what causes this error, it states that it’s due to an “internal error with the ChatGPT chatbot”, such as when there are too many concurrent requests and the server gets overloaded. This also includes misconfigurations in the ChatGPT service when using it with third-party applications.

How to Fix ChatGPT Error Code 1020

Here are five ways you can ‌fix ChatGPT access denied error:

1. Disable VPN and Proxy Server

One of the most common reasons for the 1020 error code is that your IP address has had its access permissions blocked. By changing your IP address, you may be able to bypass the error and access ChatGPT as normal.

If you already use a VPN service, try disabling it or configuring it to another location. This will alter your IP address and may let you regain access to ChatGPT.

The same goes for your proxy server. Disable it and check if you can access ChatGPT. If you can, you’ll need to change to a different proxy server in the future.

If nothing else works, try accessing ChatGPT from a different internet connection such as from your Apple iPhone or Android mobile Wi-Fi hotspot.

2. Clear Browser Cache and Cookies

As mentioned above, common browser issues like a corrupted cache can cause the ChatGPT 1020 error. To troubleshoot this, try clearing your browser’s cache, stored site data, and cookies (especially ChatGPT’s cookies).

Check out how to clear the history and cache of any web browser.

3. Disable Extensions

Your web browser extensions and add-ons can interfere with ChatGPTs functions or make your activity appear suspicious, resulting in the 1020 error code.

The easiest way to check whether your extensions are causing the error is to load ChatGPT in incognito or private mode. In Google Chrome, Firefox, Microsoft Edge, and Safari, incognito browsing functions without your extensions.

If ChatGPT works in incognito mode, temporarily disable all of your extensions and re-enable them one by one until you discover which one is causing the glitch.

If disabling your extensions doesn’t help, try using a different web browser with no extensions enabled.

4. Wait…

Since this error code can arise from internal server errors, it’s sometimes worth waiting it out. You can also check social media and websites like DownDetector to see if anyone else is reporting problems with ChatGPT.

5. Contact the Site Owner (and ChatGPT’s Support Team)

If you still haven’t regained access, it’s time to reach out for help. If you’re trying to access a third-party site or application that uses ChatGPT, reach out to the owner or support team to see if they can help you regain access.

If you can’t access ChatGPT itself, contact ChatGPT’s support team to troubleshoot the issue. You can do this by going to the help.openai.com website and selecting the chat bubble.

Back to Work

AI tools like ChatGPT are becoming more and more popular as they help people complete their work with less effort. Hopefully, this article helped you clear ChatGPT’s error code 1020 access denied so that you can get back to work.

ChatGPT, OpenAI’s innovative AI chatbot powered by the GPT-4 language model, offers a sophisticated online service. While it generally runs smoothly, users occasionally report timeout errors.

When ChatGPT keeps timing out, the user experience is significantly affected, making it harder to leverage this hot new AI tool. You’ve come to the right place if you’re facing this issue! This article will explain the common causes of these timeouts and suggest seven detailed fixes you can try.

Understanding the ChatGPT “Request Timed Out Error”

A ChatGPT network error, especially the dreaded “request timed out” error, usually indicates a disruption between the user and the ChatGPT server. These interruptions can occur for various reasons, including an unstable internet connection, a glitch in the ChatGPT plus service, an internal server error on OpenAI’s end, or even your device settings.

For instance, network congestion, a malfunctioning modem or router, or a VPN interfering with your connection might be the culprit. It could also be due to the AI’s server status: it may be down or undergoing maintenance. Alternatively, it could be a software issue – an error code generated due to lengthy responses, browser cache buildup, or browser extensions interfering with the service. The impact of these issues varies, but they can all affect your ability to access ChatGPT efficiently.

Now that you know what might be behind the problem, let’s look at how to fix ChatGPT network errors such as a timeout.

1. Check Your Internet Connection

When ChatGPT hits you with a timeout or network error, it’s easy to point the finger at the chatbot. However, the issue might be closer to home than you think. A shaky internet connection could be the culprit behind these errors. Even the most advanced AI chatbot is only as reliable as your connection. If you don’t have a stable internet connection, then ChatGPT can’t, well, chat with you.

First, ensure your device is actually connected to the internet. The fastest way is to try accessing any other website besides one from Open AI. If other sites also don’t load, there’s a good chance your connection has general issues.

If you’re using a Wi-Fi connection, ensure your router is turned on, and all the necessary lights are flashing or steady, indicating it’s working correctly. If not, try restarting the router. Unplug it from the power source, wait for about a minute, and then plug it back in.

If using a wired connection, ensure the Ethernet cable is securely connected to your device and the modem. If you can still connect, try restarting your modem using the same steps as above.

It’s also worth checking whether other devices in your household can connect to the internet. If not, it’s probably some sort of issue with your internet service provider (ISP). Get in touch with them for further guidance since it’s out of your hands at this point.

2. Check if ChatGPT Is Down

Sometimes, no troubleshooting on your end will resolve a ChatGPT timeout error simply because the problem isn’t with your setup.

Instead, the ChatGPT server might be down or undergoing maintenance, resulting in the frustrating “request timed out” error or another network error on your end. In such cases, attempting to use the ChatGPT Plus service or any other feature could result in a similar error, indicating that the issue is with the ChatGPT system itself rather than your access.

So, how do you confirm if the server is down?

Start by visiting the official OpenAI status page; here you’ll see a nice time-sliced set of graphs detailing the uptime of their various services, including ChatGPT.

You should also check OpenAI’s official social media accounts and support pages, as they often provide updates when there are significant service issues.

If you don’t see any issue on the official page, several online services monitor the server status of popular platforms, such as DownDetector. By visiting these sites and searching for “ChatGPT” or “OpenAI,” you can see if there have been many reported issues recently. These services generally provide a live outage map showing where people have reported problems.

If you find out that the server is down, unfortunately, you cannot do much. You’ll have to wait for the OpenAI team to resolve the issue. While you wait, don’t fiddle with your setup since the problem isn’t on your end. Attempting to “fix” your connection could inadvertently cause other problems.

3. Turn Off Your VPN

A VPN, or Virtual Private Network can provide a more secure connection, protect your privacy, and even bypass geographic restrictions. However, a VPN can sometimes interfere with how you access online services like ChatGPT, causing unexpected timeout errors.

When your VPN is activated, internet traffic is routed through a secure server in a different region or country. This process can slow down your internet connection or introduce instability. More importantly, it changes your IP address, which can cause issues when trying to connect to specific servers.

Some online platforms might view VPN traffic as suspicious and block it as a safety measure. If ChatGPT cannot verify your connection because a VPN masks it, it might refuse the connection, resulting in an error.

Alternatively, the VPN server may introduce a delay, leading to a timeout error or another general network error. Either way, a quick test with your VPN disabled will clear up who’s at fault.

4. Let ChatGPT Give You Shorter Responses

When using ChatGPT, how you interact with the AI chatbot can significantly impact your user experience. In particular, asking for long, detailed responses may cause the system to time out, resulting in a network error. Here’s why this happens:

Every response generated by the AI passes through an API (Application Programming Interface). The API acts as a messenger that carries the request from the user to the ChatGPT server and brings the response back. However, the API has a limit on the size of the response it can handle. If the generated response is too long, it may exceed the API’s limit, causing it to fail and leading to a timeout error.

If your interactions with ChatGPT often result in timeouts, it might be worth altering your approach. Try to ask more concise questions or ones that require shorter responses. For example, instead of asking ChatGPT to explain a complex topic in-depth, break it down into smaller questions.

This strategy reduces the chance of encountering a timeout error and improves the responses’ quality. ChatGPT can provide more precise and insightful answers with smaller, focused queries. More importantly, this allows for a more natural and interactive conversation, enhancing the overall chat experience.

5. Log Out and Back Into Your ChatGPT Account

Sometimes, a simple log-out and log back in can fix the issue. Click on your profile, log out, then sign back in. This action refreshes your session and can sometimes clear up internal server errors.

6. Use Another Web Browser

Your web browser can impact your interaction with ChatGPT. For instance, browser cache buildup, faulty browser extensions, or an unsupported browser can cause network errors. Try switching to another browser like Google Chrome or clearing browsing data in your current one.

7. Use ChatGPT Later

During peak times, server load on ChatGPT can cause it to time out. If none of the above steps work, consider using the service when server load is likely lower.

If you consistently experience network errors during specific times of the day, it might be a sign of high server load. One potential solution is to use the service at off-peak hours. Just as a restaurant kitchen can handle orders more efficiently when it’s less busy, ChatGPT servers can process requests more effectively when there’s less demand.

Of course, figuring out when these off-peak times may take some experimentation. Consider adjusting your schedule slightly if you’re using the service for work or study. You might avoid network errors and get faster, more efficient responses from ChatGPT.

There’s no denying the frustration of timeouts when interacting with ChatGPT. But armed with this comprehensive guide, you should be able to tackle most network errors head-on. Remember, if all else fails, contact OpenAI support. Keep chatting, keep exploring, and don’t let a timeout error hold you back from mastering one of the most important technologies in history.

Do you keep getting an “An error occurred” response while talking to OpenAI’s ChatGPT? It’s a generic error that appears due to many factors, including overloaded OpenAI servers, internet connectivity issues, or problems with your web browser.

This guide will walk you through multiple troubleshooting techniques to address and resolve the “An error occurred” message in ChatGPT.

What to Do When ChatGPT Display the “An Error Occurred” Message image

Regenerate Response or Reload the Browser Tab

ChatGPT is the most popular AI (artificial intelligence) chatbot on the planet, with millions of users constantly interacting with it. Naturally, that takes a toll on OpenAI’s servers and results in random system outages.

If you encounter an “An error occurred” message, begin by regenerating the response—select the Regenerate response button at the bottom of the screen.

Regenerate Response or Reload the Browser Tab image

If that fails to eliminate the error, reload the browser tab (or press Control + R or Command + R)—this action refreshes the ChatGPT session, reconnects you to its servers, and clears temporary glitches.

Regenerate Response or Reload the Browser Tab image 2

After reloading ChatGPT, select your conversation from the sidebar and continue where you left off—you’ll need to input your query again from scratch.

Check the ChatGPT Server Status

Random system outages aside, ChatGPT’s servers can succumb to heavy user activity and go offline for minutes, if not hours, at a time. If the “An error occurred” message persists, visit OpenAI’s System Status page. If the ChatGPT system isn’t operational, wait until OpenAI gets it back online.

Check the ChatGPT Server Status image

Sign Out and Back Into ChatGPT

If there’s nothing wrong with the OpenAI servers, try signing out and back into your OpenAI account. To do that:

  1. Select your email address at the bottom left corner of the browser tab.
  2. Select Log out.
  3. Log in again with your OpenAI account credentials.

Check Your Internet Connection

A stable and reliable internet connection is crucial for a smooth ChatGPT experience. If your Wi-Fi or Ethernet is erratic, expect frequent “An error occurred” responses from ChatGPT.

Perform an internet speed and stability check using the Ping command on your PC or Mac. Or, try an online Ping tool.

Check Your Internet Connection image

If your internet is unreliable, restarting or resetting your router might make the problem go away. If not, contact your internet service provider (ISP).

Disable Virtual Private Network

VPNs (or virtual private networks) are renowned for their privacy and ability to unblock geo-restricted content, but they also cause issues with web-based applications like ChatGPT. If you use a VPN on your PC or Mac, disconnect from it and check if that makes a difference.

Avoid Generating Long Responses

Prompting ChatGPT to generate lengthy replies can overwhelm the language model and trigger an “An error occurred” message. Break down your prompts and impose word limits—e.g., 250 words—to responses.

Use Another Version of GPT

If you subscribe to ChatGPT Plus, it’s possible to pick a different version of GPT to generate responses. For example, if the “An error occurred” message shows up with GPT-4 (a model that’s slow and error-prone), switching to GPT-3.5 (less accurate but faster) could help. The problem is you can’t change GPT versions midway through a conversation—you must create a new chat.

Clear the Browser Cache

An obsolete browser cache is another reason that leads to conflicts and errors in ChatGPT. Begin by clearing the cache related to the ChatGPT website. Assuming you use Google Chrome:

  1. Select the Padlock symbol next to chat.openai.com within the Google Chrome address bar.
  2. Select Site settings.
  3. Select Clear data.
  4. Switch back to the ChatGPT tab and reload it.
  5. Sign in with your OpenAI account credentials.
Clear the Browser Cache image

Delete the entire browser cache if the problem persists. To do that:

  1. Open the Chrome menu (tap three dots on the top right of the window).
  2. Select More Tools > Clear browsing data.
  3. Set Time range to All time.
  4. Check the boxes next to Cookies and other site data and Cached images and files.
  5. Select Clear data.

Clear the DNS (Domain Name Server) Cache

If clearing your browsing data doesn’t help, focus on the DNS (Domain Name System) cache next. The DNS cache contains potentially obsolete web addresses—clearing it forces the operating system to resolve connections over again, improving connectivity.

To clear the DNS cache in Windows:

  1. Right-click the Start button and select Windows PowerShell/Terminal (Admin).
  2. Type the command below:

Clear-DnsClientCache

  1. Press Enter.

If you use a Mac:

  1. Open the Launchpad and select Other > Terminal.
  2. Type the following command:

sudo dscacheutil -flushcache;sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder

  1. Press Return—enter your Mac user account password to authenticate the action.

Disable Browser Extensions

Browser extensions interfere with how web apps like ChatGPT work. Disabling them allows you to identify conflicting items. You can view and manage a list of extensions through the browser menu or settings. For example, in Chrome:

  1. Open the Chrome menu (select the three-dot icon on the top right corner) and select Extensions > Manage Extensions.
  2. Turn off the switches next to all extensions.
  3. Use ChatGPT. If the “An error occurred” response disappears, reactivate the extensions individually or in batches until you isolate the problematic add-on. Once you do that, keep the item disabled, update the extension (enable the switch next to Developer mode and select Update), or remove it from your browser.

Update Your Browser

Outdated browser versions lead to compatibility issues with web applications and trigger errors. Although web browsers auto-update themselves, it’s best to initiate manual updates once every so often. If you use Google Chrome:

  1. Open the Chrome menu.
  2. Select Help > About Google Chrome.
  3. Wait until Google Chrome detects and installs the latest updates.

Try a Different Web Browser

Different browsers have varying levels of compatibility with web apps. If you continue encountering the “An error occurred” message, switching to an alternative web browser can help avoid browser-specific issues.

For example, if the error occurs in Google Chrome, switch to a non-Chromium browser like Mozilla Firefox or Apple Safari. OpenAI is in partnership with Microsoft, so it’s also worth checking out Microsoft Edge.

Subscribe to ChatGPT Plus

ChatGPT Plus is the paid version of the AI chatbot and offers several benefits, including priority access when demand is high and faster response times. If you’re a heavy ChatGPT user, frequently encounter the “An error occurred” message, and want a more seamless experience, subscribing to ChatGPT Plus can be a significant usability upgrade.

To subscribe to ChatGPT Plus:

  1. Select your email address at the screen’s bottom left corner and choose My plan.
  2. Select Upgrade plan.
  3. Fill in your billing information and select Subscribe.

7 Best Machine Translation Software or AI Translators to Try in 2023 image

Do you need to communicate with others in multiple languages? If so, then using machine translation software or artificial intelligence translators is the way to go. This technology has come a long way since its early days of being rudimentary at best. Now, it’s becoming increasingly accurate and affordable, which is perfect for anyone who wants professional translations without having to pay exorbitant prices.

In this article, we’ll review some of the best machine translation software or AI translators on the market so you can make an informed decision when selecting which one is right for your needs in 2023.

What Is Machine Translation Software?

Machine translation software is based on artificial intelligence, and it provides automated translations of text from one language to another. This tool quickly became a part of computer-assisted translation (CAT) workflows, speeding up translation work and making it more affordable. This system is now advanced and capable of quickly translating large volumes of text. That’s why machine translation is very popular among large businesses that need bulk translation of various documents and websites.

Although some users still don’t trust the machine translation’s accuracy, these tools significantly improved over time. That’s all thanks to the new technology known as statistical machine translation (SMT), that’s capable of translating text by analyzing human translations. SMT then applies various algorithms to produce the best possible translation.

SMT was a big step forward when it comes to automated translating. However, it’s less efficient than the latest translation technology, neural machine translation (NMT). The NMT attempts to imitate the human brain and uses deep learning to generate a high-quality text translation. The result is not only almost perfect accuracy, but the translation is natural. So you can now get translations that don’t feel like they’re the result of a bot.

Why Use Machine Translation Software?

Whether you are a linguist or a business manager, you’ll find that translating tools can be of great help. Here are some of the most often cited reasons why machine translation is a better option than traditional solutions:

  • Fast results: Without a doubt, machine translation is simply faster than human translation. It can translate text or even images in a matter of seconds, and it’s great when it comes to translating large volumes.
  • Easy to use: Machine translation software is as simple as copying and pasting a text and setting the desired language. The rest is done by the tool itself.
  • Seamless operation: Some machine translation tools can easily be added to the software you typically use for business. Then you can avoid copying and pasting the text. Instead, you can have it integrated into your business, as a tool, and make real-time translations on the spot.
  • Cost-effective: Yes, machine translation software is not always free. But even if you need to pay a monthly subscription or a license, you’ll still save more money than if you go with a human translator.
  • Reliable: The professional tools are vetted by actual translators and native speakers before their release. That is why you can rest assured they are reliable and can produce accurate enough translations.

That said, let’s look at some of the best machine translation tools currently on the market.

1. Google Translate

Price: Free up to 500 000 characters per month / $20 per million characters.

  • 132 available languages

  • Downloadable app or online translation
Google Translate image

Google Translate is the most popular machine translator out there. It’s used by millions of people daily for business, academia, or day-to-day translation needs. Because it’s free, anyone can use Google Translate. It’s available online, as a downloadable app for your PC, and as a mobile app.

Google Translate can translate up to 10MB files and almost unlimited amounts of text, for free. You can copy the text, or upload a document. You can even use URLs and translate website content into any of the 132 different languages. And on top of that, you can integrate it into other software and tools.

That said, the accuracy of the translation done by Google Translate is not the best even though it greatly improved over the last few years. This software has trouble understanding certain language nuances and sometimes idioms. However, it’s completely free and simple to use, so if you don’t need the most accurate translation possible, Google Translate is great.

2. DeepL Translate

Price: Free up to 500 000 characters per month / Different subscription tiers available ranging from $6.99 to $45.99 per month.

  • 31 available languages
  • Copy text or upload files

On Monday, May 22, 2023, a verified Twitter account called “Bloomberg Feed” shared a tweet claiming there had been an explosion at the Pentagon, accompanied by an image. If you’re wondering what this has to do with artificial intelligence (AI), the image was an AI-generated one, with the tweet quickly going viral and sparking a brief stock market dip. Things could have been much worse — a stark reminder of the dangers of artificial intelligence.

Artificial Intelligence Dangers

It’s not just fake news we need to worry about. There are many immediate or potential risks associated with AI, from those concerning privacy and security to bias and copyright issues. We’ll dive into some of these artificial intelligence dangers, see what is being done to mitigate them now and in the future, and ask whether the risks of AI outweigh the benefits.

Fake News

Back when deepfakes first landed, concerns arose that they could be used with ill intent. The same could be said for the new wave of AI image generators, like DALL-E 2, Midjourney, or DreamStudio. On March 28, 2023, fake AI-generated images of Pope Francis in a white Balenciaga puffer jacket, and enjoying several adventures, including skateboarding and playing poker went viral. Unless you studied the images closely, it was hard to distinguish these images from the real thing.

While the example with the pope was undoubtedly a bit of fun, the image (and accompanying tweet) about the Pentagon was anything but. Fake images generated by AI have the power to damage reputations, end marriages or careers, create political unrest, and even start wars if wielded by the wrong people — in short, these AI-generated images have the potential to be hugely dangerous if misused.

With AI image generators now freely available for anybody to use, and Photoshop adding an AI image generator to its popular software, the opportunity to manipulate images and create fake news is greater than ever.

Privacy, Security, and Hacking

Privacy and security are also huge concerns when it comes to the risks of AI, with a number of countries already banning OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Italy has banned the model due to privacy concerns, believing it does not comply with the European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), while China, North Korea, and Russia’s governments banned it due to fears it would spread misinformation.

So why are we so concerned about privacy when it comes to AI? AI apps and systems gather large amounts of data in order to learn and make predictions. But how is this data stored and processed? There’s a real risk of data breaches, hacking, and information falling into the wrong hands.

It’s not just our personal data that’s at risk, either. AI hacking is a genuine risk — it hasn’t happened yet, but if those with malicious intent could hack into AI systems, this could have serious consequences. For example, hackers could control driverless vehicles, hack AI security systems to gain entry to highly secure locations, and even hack weapons systems with AI security.

Experts at the US Department of Defense’s Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) recognize these risks and are already working on the DARPA’s Guaranteeing AI Robustness Against Deception (GARD) project, tackling the problem from the ground up. The project’s goal is to ensure that resistance to hacking and tampering is built into algorithms and AI.

Copyright Infringement

Another of the dangers of AI is copyright infringement. This may not sound as serious as some other dangers we’ve mentioned, but the development of AI models like GPT-4 puts everyone at increased risk of infringement.

Every time you ask ChatGPT to create something for you — whether that be a blog post on travel or a new name for your business — you’re feeding it information which it then uses to answer future queries. The information it feeds back to you could be infringing somebody else’s copyright, which is why it’s so important to use a plagiarism detector and edit any content created by AI before publishing it.

Societal and Data Bias

AI isn’t human, so it can’t be biased, right? Wrong. People and data are used to train AI models and chatbots, which means biased data or personalities will result in a biased AI. There are two types of bias in AI: societal bias and data bias.

With many biases present in everyday society, what happens when these biases become part of AI? The programmers responsible for training the model could have expectations that are biased, which then make their way into AI systems.

Or data used to train and develop an AI could be incorrect, biased, or collected in bad faith. This leads to data bias, which can be as dangerous as societal bias. For example, if a system for facial recognition is trained using mainly white people’s faces, it may struggle to recognize those from minority groups, perpetuating oppression.

Robots Taking Our Jobs

The development of chatbots such as ChatGPT and Google Bard has opened up a whole new worry surrounding AI: The risk that robots will take our jobs. We’re already seeing writers in the tech industry being replaced by AI, software developers worried they’ll lose their jobs to bots, and companies using ChatGPT to create blog content and social media content rather than hiring human writers.

According to the World Economic Forum’s The Future of Jobs Report 2020, AI is expected to replace 85 million jobs worldwide by 2025. Even if AI doesn’t replace writers, it’s already being used as a tool by many. Those in jobs at risk of being replaced by AI may need to adapt to survive — for example, writers may become AI prompt engineers, enabling them to work with tools like ChatGPT for content creation rather than being replaced by these models.

Future Potential AI Risks

These are all immediate or looming risks, but what about some of the less likely but still possible dangers of AI we could see in the future? These include things like AI being programmed to harm humans, for example, autonomous weapons trained to kill during a war.

Then there’s the risk that AI could focus single-mindedly on its programmed goal, developing destructive behaviors as it attempts to accomplish that goal at all costs, even when humans try to stop this from happening.

Skynet taught us what happens when an AI becomes sentient. However, though Google engineer Blake Lemoine may have tried to convince everyone that LaMDA, Google’s artificially intelligent chatbot generator was sentient back in June 2022, there’s thankfully no evidence to date to suggest that’s true.

The Challenges of AI regulation

On Monday, May 15, 202, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman attended the first congressional hearing on artificial intelligence, warning, “If this tech goes wrong, it can go quite wrong.” The OpenAI CO made it clear he favors regulation and brought many of his own ideas to the hearing. The problem is that AI is evolving at such speed, it’s difficult to know where to start with regulation.

Congress wants to avoid making the same mistakes made at the beginning of the social media era, and a team of experts alongside Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer are already working on regulations that would require companies to reveal what data sources they used to train models and who trained them. It may be some time before exactly how AI will be regulated becomes clear, though, and no doubt there will be backlash from AI companies.

The Threat of an Artificial General Intelligence

There’s also the risk of the creation of an artificial general intelligence (AGI) that could accomplish any tasks a human being (or animal) could perform. Often mentioned in sci-fi films, we’re probably still decades away from such a creation, but if and when we do create an AGI, it could pose a threat to humanity.

Many public figures already endorse the belief that AI poses an existential threat to humans, including Stephen Hawking, Bill Gates, and even former Google CEO Eric Schmidt, who stated, “Artificial intelligence could pose existential risks and governments need to know how to make sure the technology is not misused by evil people.”

So, is artificial intelligence dangerous, and do its risk outweigh its benefits? The jury’s still out on that one, but we’re already seeing evidence of some of the risks around us right now. Other dangers are less likely to come to fruition anytime soon, if at all. One thing is clear, though: the dangers of AI shouldn’t be underestimated. It’s of the utmost importance that we ensure AI is properly regulated from the outset, to minimize and hopefully mitigate any future risks.
